The Y MountainLine Safeback SBX Lid is an accessory designed for use with the Y MountainLine 40 Daypack backpacks. This is the first device in the world to use SBX Avalanche Survival technology - an innovative technology for providing air to avalanche victims. 70% of avalanche deaths are caused by suffocation and the window for rescuing victims is approximately 15 minutes. The Safeback Lid can provide air to the victim for approximately 90 minutes, dramatically increasing the buried victim's chance of being rescued.
The system uses the air in the avalanche snow as a source for the victim. It draws it in through the intake opening in the module, delivers it to the airways through tubes in the shoulder straps, and simultaneously removes CO2.
The system is activated using a T-shaped handle on the strap.
It is powered by 6 lithium AA batteries for maximum performance in low temperatures and has been tested in the lab and in the field to last 90 minutes even at -30°C.
