- With direct drive: The rear wheel of the bicycle is removed, the cassette of the bicycle is installed on the trainer and the bicycle is directly connected to the trainer with the drive. The electromagnetic brake resists the rider when pedalling
- Cylinder trainer: Unlike stationary trainers, on a roller trainer the rider balances on the bike and cycles directly on the rollers that roll under the bike's wheels, providing a realistic feel.
Smart or traditional: Smart trainers can be connected to training apps for interactive or automatic resistance settings, to get statistics and provide other advanced features. Traditional trainers do not have smart features, but are generally more affordable and simpler.
