Choosing the right bike stem is critical to optimizing ride comfort and performance. Most modern bicycles use threadless stem, where the stem is clamped to the fork neck. Here are a few factors to consider when choosing a stem:

Stem length: Longer stems provide a more stretched and aerodynamic riding position.
Short stems can offer better handling and a more upright position. Pick the length according to your riding style, body proportions and comfort preferences.
Stem angle: The stem angle affects the height of the handlebars. Positive angles (climb) raise the handlebars higher, which is suitable for a more upright riding position, for example for enduro, DH or trail bikes. Negative angles (drop) lower the handlebars and promote a more aggressive, aerodynamic position, used especially for road cycling.
Socket diameter: Make sure the diameter of the stem socket matches the diameter of the handlebars. Common sizes are 31.8 mm and 35 mm. Older bikes or specific disciplines may use smaller sizes, such as 25.4 mm or 26 mm.
Stem height: Stem height is the vertical distance from the bottom of the stem to the top of the stem. Make sure there is enough fork neck to adjust the height and any spacers.
Material: Common materials include aluminium and carbon fibre. Aluminium is durable, affordable, and suitable for most riders. Carbon fibre is lighter and can absorb more vibration from the road, but tends to be more expensive.
