There are two European standards for protectors (protective clothing) acting against mechanical impacts. They are EN1621-1 and EN 1621-2, where the first standard EN1621-1 is reserved for all protectors except for spine protectors, which have the second, more stringent version 1621-2. From time to time, a (hardening) update is released, which is marked with the year of release. The designation of the standard can thus become, for example, EN1621-1: 1997 or 1621-2: 2003.
Both standards are then defined by the ratio of forces that the protector will transmit when a specific physical object of a precisely defined shape is struck.
The EN1621-1 standard therefore refers to protectors for the forearms, elbows, knees, shoulders, hips, coccyx, etc. The kinetic energy upon impact must be 50J. Subsequently, the force transmitted through the protector is measured. A satisfactory test must have nine results better than 35 kN without a single result exceeding 50 kN.
The EN1621-2 standard for back / spine protectors is stricter than the first standard EN1621-1. This standard does not allow to transfer more energy than 18kN. The stricter standard EN1621-2 Level 2 reduces the maximum transmitted energy to 9kN. Thus, you can come across a more accurate designation of both groups of this standard, namely EN1621-2 Level 1 (for 18kN) and EN1621-2 Level 2 (for 9kN) in CamelBak brand products.
